There is a particular person in my life that at times gives guidance, protection and love but at other times, can snap right back and destroy all my hopes in an instant. His words often bite and gnaw at the accumulated hole of insecurity as he tells the bitter truth. Never is he willing to hope for the better, but rather crushes and humiliates it.
This is not some lover, but my brother.
Maybe his past experiences has taught him something in which he is trying to teach me now.
However. I hold onto these verses from Romans 12.
"Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer." (vs 10-12)
and
"Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men." (vs 17)
